During the Cold War years, there were many races between America and the Soviet Union. The Soviets were making the greatest inventions to achieve the first of everything, and most of them kept their works secret. One of the gigantic inventions was the world’s largest aircraft, the Antonov An-225. It is a much larger size than normal passenger planes and cargo planes.
Antonov An-225 was produced to carry the Buran space shuttle to be used in the space war between the USA and the Soviets. The world’s largest aircraft, which took to the skies in 1988, was produced in the Soviet Union on the territory of today’s Ukraine. However, it was recently bombed by Russia after the Ukraine-Russia war in 2022 and became unusable. So what are the features of Antonov An-225 ? Let’s see together.
What are the Antonov An-225 Mriya Features?
Antonov An-225 with 6 engines has a length of 84 meters, which is 11 meters longer than the Airbus A380, the world’s largest wide passenger aircraft. Antonov, which has a wingspan of 88 meters, was produced for 200-250 million dollars. Antonov An-225 Mriya in Turkish; It means “dream”.
Antonov An-225 Mriya landed on Turkey many times and was sometimes used to get fuel and sometimes to bring large vehicles to Turkey. The aircraft flying to many destinations in the world has a capacity of 1500 passengers, even if it does not carry any passengers, we can say that it has much more capacity than the world’s largest passenger aircraft, the Airbus A380. So much so that the Airbus A380 can only carry 853 passengers. Antonov models were also produced before Antonov himself. However, there had to be a solution to transporting the Buran space shuttle, and older Antonov models would not be able to carry the Buran space shuttle for many reasons, with 4 engines. As a solution to this, Soviet engineers produced an aircraft with a weight of 640 tons and covered a distance of 15 thousand 400 km.
In the photo above, you can find a comparison of Antonov An-225 with other aircraft.
It should be noted that this aircraft was produced only once. The plane, which was bombed during the Russia-Ukraine war in 2022, became unusable and sunk into the dark waters of history as it would cost 3 billion dollars to be repaired again. We would like to point out that it is not certain whether Russia deliberately bombed the plane during the war. Because Russia was bombing many transportation places such as airports during the war.
