Johnny Depp will return to the director’s chair for the first time in 25 years with Modigliani, a feature film about Italian artist Amedeo Modigliani , which he will produce with Al Pacino .

Sources close to Depp confirmed the production news with Deadline. Barry Navidi will co-produce with Depp and Pacino. The film marks Navidi’s fourth collaborative project with Pacino, with whom he collaborated on The Merchant of Venice (2004), Wilde Salomé (2011) and Salomé (2013). Depp and Pacino also starred opposite each other in the 1997 crime film Donnie Brasco.

Adapted from a play by Dennis McIntyre and adapted for the big screen by Jerzy and Mary Kromolowski, the film will tell the story of the painter and sculptor in Paris in 1916 . Modigliani will tell the Italian artist’s life for 48 hours with turbulent and eventful.

Johnny Depp Redirects with Modigliani Movie

It is aimed to shoot the project in 2023. It is not yet clear whether Depp will also appear in the movie. The Italian artist was previously the subject of a 2004 biopic starring Andy Garcia. Modigliani will be Depp’s second feature directorial work after 1997’s The Brave, in which he co-starred with Marlon Brando . The movie was screened at the Cannes Film Festival. Depp also directed several music videos for his ex-wife Vanessa Paradis.

Depp plays King XV in Jeanne du Barry, the historical love story that is now French director Maïwenn’s first film in three years . Filming as Louis . Filming began on July 26 and will continue for 11 weeks, with shooting at Versailles and other castles in the Paris region.
